As AI usage surges, vast resources are consumed to create fleeting, often trivial content in the name of innovation. Behind each image, video or social media caption, generated for our amusement, lie massive data centres - many hidden in plain sight. In Dublin, a hundred of these building-sized computers are tucked away in our midst and at the edge of the suburbs. Each draws heavily on scarce resources like electricity and water, shaping our landscape in insidious but profound ways.
As this project evolves, I am exasperated at the entrapment manifested in the architecture and the influence that the algorithms running inside have on our society. I keep asking “are they worth it?”
This project was first exhibited in June 2025 at Photo Works in Griffith College.
